Grand Theft Auto 4 : The Lost & Damned

If you are a regular reader, you will remember that last year I wrote about Grand Theft Auto 4 and raved and how brilliant it was? Well, it turns out that GTA4 actually wasn't that good in the end. I personally thought that it was a step backwards from GTA : San Andreas and for the next gen console era, and for the amount of fucking hype it got, it should of been a lot better.

A year later (and six months later than planned) Rockstar have released the first DLC for the series with GTA4 : The Lost & Damned, which isn't just more missions or a few extra guns, but it's a completely different game altogether.

Although Rockstar may not be adding much to the footprint of Liberty City with The Lost and Damned, conjuring a fresh island out of the muddy rivers, or laying down a fine spray of new skyscrapers, flyovers, and dockyards, Rockstar have been hard at work building stories; sculpting new characters, fabricating dense relationship networks of cause and effect, and plumbing in a buried system of deadly motives and smouldering resentment. The Lost and Damned's narrative sees the developer on top form, creating an unnerving pressure-cooker tale that draws on the familiar GTA themes of hierarchy, revenge, and going for a drive with a passenger who doesn't mind it when you flip the car at an intersection and plant it upside down in a bakery.

This time it's the bikers who hog the spotlight. Johnny Klebitz has been in charge of The Lost Motorcycle Club while the President, Billy Grey, has been in rehab. Billy's out now, and somewhat perturbed to see his rowdy fightin' and fumin' street gang turned into a (relatively) smooth-running corporation, a truce in place with long-time rivals The Angels of Death, and a new strategy based on lying low and allowing the flourishing narcotics business to bring in the money. It's old versus new, then, and within the space of one mission, dangerous tensions are simmering away between Johnny and Billy, with the stage set for a conflict that could tear the gang apart.

While the tale is simple enough, the telling is brilliant and often devilishly subtle. Johnny and Billy are entirely empathetic leads - the former gruff yet care-worn, the latter gently terrifying, but somehow touching - and their performances set new standards for videogame naturalism. The story's topical themes find time to take in elections, the recession, and the knotty question of good governance, and while there are shoot-outs, explosions, chases, and car-jackings, Rockstar's greatest talent is for restraint - refusing again and again to let the main characters' feud spill over into actual violence, until the sense of impending doom is almost unbearable. The game may revel in an open world, but, once more, Liberty City's citizens are thoroughly trapped: hemmed in by financial imperatives, pathetic addictions, and outdated thinking. Videogames don't often ask you to think of their characters in this way.

Lead a convoy into a wall, and you'll get an amusing pile-up of grisly biker folk tangled up together. Oddly entertaining.

Yet The Lost and Damned is also a love story, as an unlikely romance blossoms between the player and the game's rebalanced bikes. Insubstantial and often prone to bursts of bizarre behaviour in most GTA games, they're transformed here into road-hugging monsters, lithe and powerful: a brutal mixture of low-riding menace and chugging, thrumming audio. You'll feel part of the gang, too, with lengthy convoy drives spiced up by a mini-game that encourages you to ride in formation in order to unlock extra dialogue, while each mission ends with any surviving team-members levelling up in terms of toughness and experience. While it's hard to say exactly how much help your leather-waistcoated brothers provide during the game's regular shoot-outs, at the very least they create a constant stream of chummy chatter, and are blessedly skilled at staying alive at critical moments.

What Rockstar hasn't been building, however, is a fresh approach for the missions. It's hardly fair to expect the developers would do something so fundamental for an expansion pack, but while the game is never less than a joy to play, with the thrill of exploring a new city gone, the rate at which the company's story skills are evolving while their missions remain largely unchanged is becoming increasingly apparent.

Yet, even if the development team is having trouble escaping from the point-to-point nature of most of the challenges, Rockstar is getting increasingly good at embellishing the framework: while many missions involve following the GPS to a location, shooting it out like a low-down desperado, and then escaping from the police afterwards, there's a fair amount of variation on display, along with some excellent staging which sees you leading dirty cops to an ambush, fighting your way out of a tenement building crawling with N.O.O.S.E. agents, and lying in wait for a drug drop at a rainy toll booth.

And when it can't bring variety, The Lost and Damned simply reaches for the bigger guns, handing over the RPG for an explosive assassination at the airport, and allowing you to smoke out your enemies with the new - and intensely satisfying - grenade launcher. And - finally - there's the merciful addition of mid-mission checkpoints, which transform the game's longer set-pieces from endless restart slogs into a series of discrete challenges that no longer make you so angry.

Alongside the story campaign, there's a generous range of additional treats: the new clubhouse offers gambling and arm-wrestling mini-games, as well as the strangely addictive 3D Tetris variation called QUB3D, and there's a mass of fresh internet sites, radio stations, races, and twenty-five new Gang Wars - brutal territory fights which are waiting to erupt between biker clubs at various spots around the city. Then there's multiplayer, with new modes like Lone Wolf Biker fulfilling your sadistic tendencies as the entire pack descends on a single player, while Turf War variant Own the City enlivens Team Deathmatch with its brutal land-grabbing, and Chopper vs. Chopper pits bike against helicopter for some highly asymmetric battle-racing.

With a fulsome single-player campaign that will soak up somewhere in the region of fifteen hours of your time while threading in a genuinely memorable story, and a pile of new distractions, there's no question that Rockstar has raised the bar on what players should expect from downloadable content. This isn't the short burst of simulated history that Operation: Anchorage offered Fallout 3 fans, or the quirky asides of Fable II's Knothole Island. Instead, it's approaching the kind of package most developers would have few qualms about boxing up and selling to you full-price as an entirely new game.

While the company's talent with stories suggests the day may be approaching when GTA runs up against the inevitable limits of openworld titles - a Scorsese-quality narrative, where characters are happy to spend their time driving around in klutzish dodgem cars - for the moment, the trade-off still works. That's why, for now at least, you'll be more than happy to come along for the ride.

How Much Would The Death Star Cost

As fans already learned, the Death Star isn’t only huge, it’s apparently easily destroyed. Kinda makes you wonder how much it would cost to construct a Death Star of your very own. Luckily, someone else figured it out. Ryszard Gold considered the Death Star’s size, the price to launch it into space, and all the air you need to fill it so you and your own Tarkin BFF can run up and down the passageways.

Add it all up, and we have a figure of exactly:
£10,533,190,016,993,759,504,367,616 and 0 pence

That is a lot of money. Wait, no that’s a disgustingly large sum of money. How much exactly? £10 Septillion, I told you. But how can we conceive of that number? Well, the figures I could find for the World Economic Value were pretty general, around £10 Trillion. In other words, the DS would cost 1.11 TRILLION times the amount of money available in the world, that’s not even including the fact that the majority of that is digital and not physical.

I love how you can line up the record label in various ways and the center hole of the record is lined up with the iPod’s scroll wheel of course. These awesome cases were made by Contexture Design, but sadly they are completely sold out of the 45 cases right now. You can see why.

A cavalcade of music figures and other dignitaries gathered this morning to honor Motown at the place where it all started.

Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr., the Four Tops’ Duke Fakir and the Vandellas’ Rosalind Ashford were among those who assembled at the Motown Historical Museum to recognize the Detroit-bred label’s 50th anniversary.

On Jan. 12, 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. secured the $800 family loan that allowed him to start the company that eventually produced some of popular music’s biggest stars as it left its own indelible mark on Detroit history.

On a podium in Studio A, where many of the label’s biggest hits were recorded, well-wishes and recollections were delivered by about a dozen Motown veterans, including arranger Paul Riser, songwriter Ivy Hunter and charm-school instructor Maxine Powell.

“To me, you all are standing on hallowed ground,” Fakir told the throng of journalists crammed into the small basement room, including reporters for MTV and several European outlets.

Official “Motown Day” proclamations were presented by Cockrel, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and a representative for Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm. All spoke of the label’s importance to Detroit and the region while paying tribute to Motown’s cross-generational appeal and racial diversity.

“Motown really is a gift. And it’s a gift that will continue to be passed on from generation to generation,” said Cockrel, who speculated that Motown music will be revered in coming centuries the way Mozart and Beethoven are today.

Robin Terry, the museum’s chief executive officer and the niece of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., read a statement from Gordy, who has lived in Los Angeles since moving the label there in the early 1970s.

“I am honored that you are celebrating the Motown legacy and our 50th anniversary by declaring today as Motown Day in Detroit,” read Gordy’s statement. “Motown music was for everybody, and grew out of love.”

Museum officials expect high traffic this week as area residents and auto-show visitors make their way to the West Grand Boulevard complex for a dose of anniversary nostalgia. The museum is offering half-price admission through Friday, and will feature a rotating cast of Motown alumni acting as tour guides each afternoon. (Go to www.motownmuseum.com for museum details.)

High Contrast went a bit over the top and remixed so much stuff this year but this was not only his best remix, but prolly the best d'n'b of the year. It keeps the epiciness and big room sound of the original but makes it even better. Tune of the year.

A raging yeaaaah leads to the Kings' most gloriously unsubtle chorus ever: "Your sex is on fire," Caleb Followill yawps. An unusual come-on, maybe, but it's so passionate, it works.

3. Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite

He's Kanye's new sidekick, and no wonder: This portrait of a "lonely stoner" is emotionally raw, thanks to its minimal, bleeping electro hook.

4. Lil Wayne - A Milli

Like all rappers, Lil Wayne rarely lets a song go by without declaring at some point that he's ill. The difference is that he really seems to be. The backing track here — little more than a bass kick, some plastic-y snares and an endlessly looped sample of the words "a milli a milli a milli" stolen from A Tribe Called Quest's "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" — never coheres into a chorus, and all the elements move in different rhythms. It's like hearing a song through cough syrup — perfect for Wayne, who wheezily declares "I don' write shit 'cause I don't got time," and then conjures up enough crazy, off-balance wordplay to convince you he's either a liar or a savant. Either way, he's definitely some kind of ill.

5. Santogold - LES Artistes

The New Wave guitar hook of the year, served with an icy dis of New York hipsters by dance punk's reigning queen: "Leave me out, you name-dropper!"

6. MGMT - Time To Pretend

It's a challenge to communicate one simple emotion in a pop song, let alone two complicated ones. The achievement of "Time to Pretend" is that it's simultaneously detached and wrenching. Brooklyn duo Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden mock their own rock star ambitions ("I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars/ You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars") while a space-pop melody with a Ziggy Stardust-worthy keyboard riff builds and swirls around them, gradually overwhelming all the irony until what started as a joke of a song ends in genuine sadness.

7. Kanye West - Love Lockdown

Singing in an Auto-Tuned monotone with little regard for melody, West sounds ghostly as he recounts his romantic failures in brutal detail. Just when "Love Lockdown" seems too brittle to sustain itself, humanity arrives in the form of an army of Japanese taiko drums. At first it sounds like pop-guns going off, but the drumming gets faster, warmer, wilder, and matched against West's distant vocals "Love Lockdown" turns into a dance song about misery — far closer to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" than any hip-hop ancestor. It's easily the most interesting pop experiment this year, and, if you grant its premise and stick with it, also the best.

8. The Chemical Brothers -Electronic Battle Weapon 10 (Midnight Madness)

A beaverish bassline underpins a colossal conflagration of synths and samples. Add dancing keyboards, a host of head-spinning effects and voracious growling vocals and all that’s required is a classic Chems’ breakdown, which comes in at a point where the track becomes more intimate, more in your face than it already has been. Sweet insanity, indeed.

8-Bit Jesus is an 18 track album featuring everyone's favorite Christmas tunes, but created using the music from classic NES games. It was all amazingly well made by Doctor Octoroc. I particularly enjoyed "We Three Konami", "8 Days of Master Robots", "Joy to Commando", "Super Jingle Bros.", "Bubbles We Have Heard On Bobble", "What Guardian is Legend?", "Icarus! The Angels Sing", "O Come, All Ye Vampires", "Kraid, Rest Ye Merry Mother Brain", and "Have Yourself A Final Little Fantasy". Okay, they're all good.

You can listen to and download the whole album for free HERE, but Doctor Octoroc's ultra-cute, 6-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ein (undoubtedly and awesomely named after Cowboy Bebop), has had to have surgery recently. If you donate $15 the doctor will send you a physical copy of the CD, and you'll help Ein in the process.

88 Keys - The Death Of Adam

Death of Adam is the debut album by producer and rapper 88-Keys. The album features guest appearances by Kanye West, Kid Cudi, J*Davey, Redman, Bilal, Phonte of Little Brother, and alternative rock group Shitake Monkey.

The album tells the story of an investigation surrounding the death of a man named Adam who was murdered in his Harlem loft apartment. During a recent interview in regards to the album's concept 88' stated:

“ The entire album is about the power of the punani, if you will. The album follows the story line of my man Adam who passed away and basically how he died. It all started off with him catching a boner one morning, morning wood, and his life starts to spin out of control from there.”

The story is told instrumentally, while the featured artists help get the story across. 88' has described that his inspiration for the project derived from the thought, "What gives me pleasure?" His obvious answer being pussy...

“ I thought, “What gives me pleasure?” So I thought, Polo clothes, blue label of course, give me pleasure, when I’m out coppin’. Making beats bring me pleasure. Money. I’m like, “Boom! I know what gives me pleasure! Pussy!” So as soon as that thought came into my head, I’m like, “Okay. I’m scrapping all the other beats I had made for my album so far, and I’m starting with this one. This is the first beat for my album.” And I just stayed on it.”

Aside from tracks, the album's investigative story is told through visual means, particularly DCN 27 News pieces that were distributed on multiple video-sharing sites. In the faux news bulletins, local news reporter Chip Adams interviews various artists who apparently knew Adam to a certain extent and provide their feedback on his death. The viral series includes cameos by Q-Tip, Consequence, Kid Cudi and Shitake Monkey.

The albums lead single, "Stay Up! (Viagra)", features 88’s best friend and executive producer of the project, Kanye West. In a recent interview 88' stated that despite his friendship with Kanye West he never explicitly asked Kanye to get involved with his project:

“ I really didn’t approach him at all. Him and I, we’re best friends, so he’s kinda been there almost every step of the way. So just me playing him the album, he was diggin’ it a lot. He liked it a lot. He definitely brought something to the table as far as the story line is concerned. He actually helped me rewrite the story, trim the fat off the album and then he gave the story a brand new twist ending that was so genius.”

It's a pretty dope hip hop album, I would well recommend it

Just look at that robot face on the Brionvega RR226. Who wouldn’t be charmed by that retro 60s ‘design? Both the RR226 and its 1965 counterpart, the Radiofonografo RR126, earned the nickname “musical component robots” due to that face, with it’s dials and speakers.

But it isn’t all about looks. Brionvega is known for creating superior decks with quality components. This one is no exception, combining a phonograph, radio, record player and a CD/DVD drive. In fact, the new model looks like a copy of the original, aside from the inclusion of the CD and DVD drive. No word on price yet, but I probably can’t afford it anyway.

If you are a fan of Pendulum and/or Hadouken the you will love The Qemists. Between the three of them, they have worked in every musical capacity available, From remixers of Coldcut, The Cooper Temple Clause, Dr Octagon and Roots Manuva among others. To live sound engineering for Basement Jaxx, Kano, Lady Sovereign, as well as many of the biggest names in Drum n Bass.

In 2005 their debut release on Ninja Tune, a remix of Coldcut’s “Everything is under control” had massive support from Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, 1Xtra’s Crissy Criss, Andy C, Pendulum, as well as making it into Pendulum and Coldcut’s Radio 1 Essential mixes. Laurent Garnier said about the track “The Qemists remix is a phat monster motherfucker – Great! Can’t wait to play it at the weekend!” (And he did!)

Always on a mission to do something different, their 3 man, 2 deck, 2 laptop DJ set was born, bursting with double drops, live remixes and the sound of technology. This has landed them a residency at Devotion in their hometown of Brighton, and sets around the country.

The Qemists first started working together as the drummer, bassist and guitarist in a rock band. This took them around the UK and Europe gigging and gave them a lot of time in the studio recording. It was during this time, around 1997, that an interest in Drum n Bass took hold, and some of the groups early DnB efforts started to get airplay. For years the three were playing in a rock band by day and producing and djing dnb by night, which lead to an inevitable conclusion; why not do both at the same time.

It's been a while since my last post, this has been partly due to the fact that I've recently started a new job, but it's more to do with laziness. So here's a mega post, of some cool new gear to go out and buy.

In video game news Wipeout HD has finally been release for the Playstation 3 via the Playstation store, it costs £11.99 and is in a nutshell a HD of the last 2 Wipeout games for the PSP mashed into one. It features HD 1080p graphics, 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and an Online mode as well as all the usual manic Wipeout mayhem. Well worth downloading if you have a Playstation 3.

I recently picked up this boxset What It Is! which is basicially a 4CD boxset of some ultra rare grooves and funky soul. It has 91 tracks including an unreleased alternative mix of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady". This is a must for fans of 45's or anybody who likes real funky music. French electronica duo Justice recently posted “Planisphère”, a 15 minute piece that was commissioned by Dior Homme for their Spring/Summer 2009 runway show, onto their myspace. It's split into four parts and centered around one basic chord progression. As you can imagine it's pure electronic sleaze.

Three days ago Mr. West dropped his new track ‘Love Lockdown’ on his own blog. The single is off his new album “808’s & Heartbreak” set for a December 16th release.

I'm not sure about this tune, especially after hearing the beat he produced for Jay-Z latest single "Jocking Jay-Z". However saying that, I didn't like Graduation at first, and now I believe it's his best album so far

What Apple Did Today

So maybe you missed what just went down? or maybe you just didn't care. Anyway here's what went down at the Apple and there's not too much to be shocked about.

iTunes 8:
First up was iTunes 8, the first full number upgrade for itunes since 2006. I'll give a quick run down. With iTunes 8 you can browse by album cover, and there's some "new bar at the top let's you look at anything graphically in little tiles".

There's also some sort "Genius" playlisting feature, this is something i'll have to look into. Here's a quote about it pulled from today's event: "You've got your music library, you turn on Genius -- it sends information about your library to iTunes. We can learn about your musical tastes... but completely anonymously... but we're going to combine your info with other users, and as that happens Genius gets smarter and smarter." Not sure I personally like the sound of that.

iPod Nano:
Next on the Apple agenda was the new ipod Nano. As expected Apple returned to the "classic" nano shape, the long, elegant and skinny design we loved so much on the 1st and 2nd generation nanos. We're now being treated to 2 capacities (8gb/16gb - priced at £109 and £149 respectively) and 9 colours as you can see above, the firmware has been given a bit of a fresh lift visually as well as the addition of a couple of nifty features including "shake to shuffle" and screen orientation tilting, both thanks to the newly incorporated accelerometer. Battery life 24hrs audio, 4hrs video.

iPod Classic:
Then Jobs gave us news that there would be only one ipod Classic, available in 120gb and retailing at £179, so it will be going head to head with Microsoft's Zune120...that's all about that really, nothing else new given to it...seems like the hard drive based ipod that started it for Apple is well and truly on it's way out.

iPod Touch:
Finally Steve introduced the updated ipod Touch. According to Steve they've made the Touch even thinner and included a built-in speaker as well as integrated volume controls (w00p) and even included Nike+ built right into the touch, they've changed the backplate from chrome to stainless steal as well. Battery life is rated at 36hrs for audio and 6 for video, capacities remain the same but prices have dropped to £219 for the 16gb and £289 for the 32gb.
